Green light for Eastex as new EU waste legislation sets binding 2020 targets for Re-use!
New waste legislation for the EU will include targets for re-use and recycling of waste to be attained by 2020. The legislation also requires Member States to stick to a five-stage waste hierarchy: prevention, re-use, recycling, other recovery operations and, as a last resort, safe and environmentally sound disposal. This is designed to prevent and reduce waste production – and should be treated "as a priority order" rather than what is often currently seen as a "guiding principle". What is more, there are specific targets for re-use and recycling of commercial waste (i.e. 70% of non-hazardous construction and demolition waste by 2020). All of this is great news for re-use schemes like the Materials Exchange as there are currently few regulatory drivers or targets explicitly for commercial re-use or recycling. Viva la Eastex!!!

Sustainable transport includes walking, cycling, using public transport, car sharing, using pool cars and bikes, and using vehicles that minimise carbon emissions, such as electric, LPG, bio diesel and hybrid cars. Suffolk County Council is now working with businesses, schools, developers and individuals by promoting sustainable travel through travel planning. Eastex Design Competition: Trespa a striking material
Eastex is launching a competition to find the best ideas for reusing off-cuts of a board like material called Trespa - which is normally used to make furniture. The winning idea will receive £100 plus a goody bag of green products, as well as the chance to see their idea taken forward as a fully fledged product. Whittlesey based company, Leisure Engineering Projects. (LEP) has 2 tonnes of off-cuts of this material per week and are keen to see whether it could be reused as part of their bid to operate in an environmentally friendly way. LEP enlisted the help of the reuse experts at Eastex. Project Manager Ian Tennant explains, ‘The wackier the idea the better, but we are also looking for long term uses for the off-cuts providing an ongoing solution. If you are a budding entrepreneur, or have an eye for making use of unwanted materials then we want to hear from you!’.
