This event is the first to recognise and reward the expertise in the field of consultancy that guides the most significant environmental policies and actions in the UK and beyond. Three of the organisations that run Eastex across the East of England are consultancies and have made it to the final six in the Waste and Recycling category. We will be competing against the likes of Coca-Cola, Anglian Water and the Environment Agency. The awards will be presented at a gala dinner at London’s Natural History Museum on November 13th 2008. PARLIAMENTARY PRESSURE - EASTEX TO THE RESCUE AS BUSINESSES FEEL THE HEAT! Article submitted by IAN TENNANT, PECT, on 22/08/2008 PARLIAMENTARY PRESSURE - EASTEX TO THE RESCUE AS BUSINESSES FEEL THE HEAT! As the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee urges government to reduce waste from business – Eastex, the National Materials exchange is ready and waiting to help. The Parliamentary Committee recommends using variable VAT rates to cut consumption of raw materials. The committee acknowledged that rising landfill tax has been effective in reducing waste dumped as landfill, but said other initiatives are needed. About 1/3 of the UK's waste is produced by construction and demolition. Nevertheless, government action and media attention have concentrated on the much smaller, 9% from households. Councils too should change focus, it recommends, to look at business waste. Resource Efficiency schemes like Eastex are funded by departments whose budgets have been cut - a move the committee expresses ‘extreme disappointment’ at. They argue that policies should aim first at reducing what people use, then encourage re-use, and finally stimulate recycling. Here Here – says Eastex!
